This page is for bands and other “time-based” performers who wish to perform and want to know who they contact to make arrangements to perform.
Recycled Rainbow, before it was even called Recycled Rainbow, was essentially a sound-centered event bringing experimental sound artists together to share their craft with one another. Since then, sound art has been a central element to Recycled Rainbow.
A core meme of sound performance is “the stage”, a central area where performers are placed to “do something” while a group of people sit or stand before them focusing their attention on “the stage” and thus on the performers. While we do not wish to disrupt this central historical element of sound performance, we also do not want to defeat other possibilities by endorsing it.
If you have an idea that involves sound performance without a central stage, you have found a welcome place to pursue that idea. If your work requires a stage, you will certainly find a place to perform.
The idea of providing a decentralized performance canvas has been most appealing to us for some time. This doesn’t mean that there will not be a central performance stage- it just means that Recycled Rainbow will not be providing one. If you, as an individual, want to provide a stage area for performances, please do! But also unnderstand that that stage area is your responsibility. By building a stage you are building art on the grounds. You are responsible for safely executing this project. See the Recycled Rainbow Art Guidelines.
Very few camping areas (if any) will have electrical outlets, so if you wish to provide amplification you may have to provide electricity as well. . If you are building a stage area you are responsible for talking to your neighbors and anyone else effected by the sound that will necessarily be produced on your stage. While Recycled Rainbow is a blank canvas bent on pushing the limits of radical inclusion and expression, we are also a community of people living together for four days. Be considerate of your neighbor. Make friends and communicate!
Performers who do not wish to build their own stage are encouraged to contact someone who will be building a stage at the event as soon as possible and make arrangements with them as to when they can perform. Performance/stage areas are listed under the Theme Camp section of this website. Theme Camps including stage areas are requested, if showcasing public performances, to provide contact information so performers can contact you before the event begins.
It’s true that you don’t need a stage if you bring enough of the proper equipment. If you are camping near a camp with electricity, or if your camp has electricity (it probably will not). You can plug in and perform when you wish. Understand that doing this turns your camp into an RR art installation. As an art installation you are required to read the Recycled Rainbow Art Guidelines, requested to follow them and assume total responsibility for your installation.
None of this should be new to you if you have been to Recycled Rainbows in the past. Many times, mysterious instruments will appear out of nowhere with signs on them reading “play me”.
Routinely, Recycled Rainbows have seen musicians walking around the house with battery-powered amplifiers singing and playing strange and beautiful music out of the blue.
We are very excited about what a large open area of land will provide for what is already a large open area of creativity.
