As promised, here is the list of volunteer opportunities as presented by Meredith of the Phoenix Project at last Saturday’s Town Hall meeting.

LEAF: Grow With Us-Volunteer!

Address:LEAF Community PO Box 770374 Lakewood, OH 44107
Email: leafcommunity@gmail.com
Phone: (216) 367-2834
Calendar: LEAF Google Calendar

Thank you to everyone who pitched in over the past couple of years either at the library, City Fresh Distribution Center, or in the many other ways by which volunteers added their unique character and support to the project. Without the help of dedicated volunteers, LEAF Nights would not have been possible.

To meet the growing demand for our programs, we need to expand our volunteer base. There are many volunteer opportunities; in fact, there are options for all ages, interests and skills. If you haven’t told us about your interests already please fill out the form at the bottom of the page. This will help us identify whom to contact for future events and volunteer opportunities. We are also seeking applications for board member positions, which can be indicated below.

Cleveland Give Camp

http://clevelandgivecamp.org/Volunteer/SignUp

GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations. This custom software could be a new website for the nonprofit organization, a small data-collection application to keep track of members, or a application for the Red Cross that automatically emails a blood donor three months after they’ve donated blood to remind them that they are now eligible to donate again. The only limitation is that the project should be scoped to be able to be completed in a weekend.

During GiveCamp, developers are welcome to go home in the evenings or camp out all weekend long. There are usually food and drink provided at the event. There are sometimes even game systems set up for when you and your need a little break! Overall, it’s a great opportunity for people to work together, developing new friendships, and doing something important for their community.

At GiveCamp, there is an expectation of “What Happens at GiveCamp, Stays at GiveCamp”. Therefore, all source code must be turned over to the charities at the end of the weekend (developers cannot ask for payment) and the charities are responsible for maintaining the code moving forward (charities cannot expect the developers to maintain the codebase).

We are currently accepting applications for charities to submit work proposals through our website. Please see the Charity section of this web site to submit your proposal.

If you are a developer/designer/project manager looking to make a difference and use your skills to assist others, this is the place to be July 16, 17, 18, 2010! Please visit the Volunteer section to get signed up!

Greater Cleveland Hunger Network

The Walk for Hunger is the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland’s signature event that takes place each May to raise funds and awareness to fight hunger in Greater Cleveland. The Walk for Hunger is a walk through downtown beginning at Burke Lakefront Airport and finishing at the North Coast Harbor with music, refreshments and entertainment for the entire family. Over 2,200 walkers in teams of 10 or more participate each year and help raise money to directly support hungry men, women & children right here in greater Cleveland. Walkers who raise $40 or more earn a Walk for Hunger T-shirt.

4th Annual Rolling on the River- Friday, October 1, 2010
Join the Friends of the Hunger Network, a Young Professional Group, for a fabulously fun party at Windows on the River. Tickets are $50 each and include free play money for casino games, complimentary food, wine, beer, live music, raffle prizes and a great silent auction

Lakewood Christian Service Center

Phone 216-226-6466

Lakewood Christian Service Center is a collaborative organization of individuals, Lakewood churches, businesses and civic organizations. The organization was begun in 1982 as twelve Lakewood churches combined their resources to provide a Hunger Center for local residents. Soon after its founding the volunteers made a commitment to address the deeper questions of why clients were coming in need of food. Throughout its history the Center has been dedicated to addressing the needs of Lakewood citizens who are jobless, hungry, and/or in crisis. The Center provides job-search assistance; emergency food; advocacy with housing, utilities and public assistance; and information and referral services. Originally an all-volunteer organization, the Lakewood Christian Service Center now employs six part-time and two full-time staff members. More than 100 volunteers who provide auxiliary and direct client service further support the work of the Center. The Center is an independent 501(C)(3) organization. The Board membership consists of representatives from 22 sponsoring churches and at-large seats filled by representatives of businesses and community organizations.

Lakewood Christian Service Center volunteers typically serve from 2-4 hours on one or more days each week. They greet our clients, stock the shelves, bag the groceries, answer the phones, and help with recordkeeping. If you are interested, print, fill out, and return the LCSC Volunteer Application [PDF], which will open in a new window (close when done). Thank you!

A chance to meet us & other fellow burners in the Cleveland area. There will be a Q&A afterward so you can ask questions about RR and learn more of our upcoming event called Primer.

Our lovely Volunteer Coordinator Javamama will tell you all the ways in which you can get involved at "Recycled Rainbow: Deception?" which takes place September 23 - 26th, 2010.

Featuring guest speaker Poosie Kat, who is driving all the way up from Cincinnati to speak on behalf of Scorched Nuts, Southern Ohio’s regional burn (June 17-19, 2010.)

Also featuring Sam Harmon to speak on behalf of Handmade Music Cleveland, and Nick Traenkner to speak on behalf of The Failure Society.

If you cannot make it to the meeting, consider coming to the afterparty @ The Winchester Music Hall in Lakewood where we will be hanging out until the bar closes. It is a great opportunity to meet local burner types, discuss your own ideas for art installations & theme camps if you want, or just simply have a light and social evening with like-minded friends you've never met.

We have rented out their performance hall for the evening, so you are heavily encouraged to show up and buy a drink or two and stay awhile. :)

March 1, 2010

8:00 pm

This year’s ticketing system will work differently than in past years. With an increased population of participants, Recycled Rainbow has gotten more expensive to produce. More people mean higher insurance rates, more portajon servicings, and higher departmental budget requests.

To simplify things for ourselves, there are going to be two major ticket tiers.

With increasing popularity of the event we have been selling more at the first level, as the only restriction was buying them by a certain deadline.

Last year, nearly HALF of all ticket sales were at the first-level which left us in a precarious situation as we struggled to cover expenses prior to the event.

This year, to be fair to our low-income participants while still ensuring we are fair to ourselves, the first level ticket tier will have a cap of 40 tickets.

They will start at $30 and will only be available for purchase online at www.recycledrainbow.org (starting March 1, 2010 at 8 PM.)

Once the $30 level has sold out, all tickets will be $45 until the first day of the event, Thursday, September 23, 2010. The $45 tickets will be available online, from Recycled Rainbow organizers and at select venues in the Cleveland/Akron area this spring/summer.

Please help our community and do your part: buy tickets at the highest price level you can afford. When you buy a higher priced ticket it allows lower-income members of our community to purchase tickets at price levels they can afford.

PayPal orders can be placed using all major cred cards (Amex, Discover, Visa and Mastercard). We will not accept personal checks. Tickets are non-refundable!

Tickets are free for children 12 and under accompanied with a parent or guardian. People 13-17 pay full price and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate.

If you have any questions, please email tickets@recycledrainbow.org.

Music will be provided by a variety of DJ’s, including RR veteran Larry Szyms!

We will have some special guests representing local culture-hacking organizations such as Notacon (where we will be representing this year April 15th & 16th!) , Makers’ Alliance, Cleveland Hoop Dance, and the Failure Society! Interested in learning more about them? Maybe even interested in joining them? Here is your chance to meet them in person!

Members of the Recycled Rainbow community are donating towards a half-keg of beer along with appetizers, though you can order anything from the bar, and you’re welcome to order from the Pub’s kitchen upstairs. Other than the donated keg, any drinks ordered at the bar are at the Pub’s prices. If you are drinking from the keg, we ask that you at least kindly tip the bartender.

Some of us in the RR community are also donating towards raffle prize(s), TBA!

*This is not a fundraiser.* The $5 entry fee is to defray the cost of the event.

**While the event has some free food and free beer, it’s also first come, first serve!

It's hard to believe 2010 is almost here! As the holidays approach, it's more difficult to imagine preparations for a new event have already begun.

While there were certainly mistakes to learn from, we shouldn't ignore our successes in 2009. This was artistically and organizationally our most participatory year to date. Despite a surprising 50% growth in attendance (and three major burns), we left it cleaner than previous years. All those with burning art installations took responsibility to clean the debris and plant seed in its place (some even came back a week later to ensure this was done.) Today, a couple months after RR 2009, there is already some grass replacing the scorched earth. Fuck yeah!

All the participants who built and tore down the city (filled with structures people building, cooking, drinking, eating, performing, & dancing) once again left no trace.

It’s hard to believe 2010 is almost here! As the holidays approach, it’s more difficult to imagine preparations for a new event have already begun.

While there were certainly mistakes to learn from, we shouldn’t ignore our successes in 2009.

Despite the most relentless rainfalls since RR has gone outdoors (turning many tents into swimming pools) there was a major growth in collaborative art structures & villages.

We have seen outstanding readiness & preparation from those who learned from previous years (and no major injuries to report!)

All the team leads, and I mean this, all of them did a kickass job of building talented, responsible, and effective teams who played a major role in this year’s success. Our greatest achievement was collaborative radical inclusion, and we wish to push it even further in 2010. I am proud to say we have gotten the official invite to return to the same land, and we accepted. Recycled Rainbow will begin on Thursday September 23rd, and end on Sunday September 26th.

A once sleeping event awakens to new opportunities & challenges; opportunities for growth (internally and externally,) and there are challenges to build an even more imaginative invisible city.

It starts with our most grueling process of the year: DESIGN!

More specifically next year’s ticket design & business-card sized fliers.

To build on last year’s success of radical inclusion, we are opening up our design team to anyone who wishes to participate. But first, there are three things you must know:

You must adhere to the event’s theme, deadline, and design requirements (of which there are a shit-ton.)

The theme for Recycled Rainbow 2010 is: “Deception?” (the question-mark is deliberate, and must be included whenever you reference this year’s theme in your art work submissions.)

“Deception?” has multiple meanings we encourage you to thematically explore. We deliberately posed it as a question, as deception always is, and always isn’t. Is truth merely perception? How does one discern fact from fiction? Friend from foe? Ally from terrorist? Deception is natural, but not always predictable?

Consider the chameleon blending into its surroundings for survival, or the grasshoppers/crickets you almost always hear, but almost never see, or the 300+ variants of phasmids (stick-bugs) which change their pigmentation to match their surroundings. Humans were not the first to use camouflage. Even plants will sometimes hide other plants from insects, or deceptively make themselves smell like stressed bees to attract bee-eating hornets to get pollinated (is there nothing an orchid won’t do in order to get laid? Assholes!)

Sometimes blue-jays impersonate hawks when swooping down to get food, chasing all the other birds away who are convinced a much larger more menacing bird is about to kill them. Heck, my own cats whine about their hunger when DG comes home, who then feeds them, but when I come home they deceptively whine again hoping to get seconds! (I used to fall for it, but now know better to ask her first.)

It’s not just about magic & illusion & prank. Sometimes the deception we perceive is self-deception. What you see is not always what you get, but sometimes it is, though you think it isn’t.It isn’t?

Artistically take this in whatever direction you wish.

And nooooooooooow for the design requirements:

Welcome from your friendly Recycled Rainbow fascist design requirements team! This year we have PLENTY of hideous design requirements intentionally built to constrain the hell out of your creativity and make designing tickets and fliers a pain in the ass! But no worries! We’re sure you’ll have a lot of fun putting these designs together as we’ve turned the process into a COMPETITIVE DOUCHEBAG ACTIVITY.

In all seriousness, these are requirements we’ve practiced for the past two years after much learning as to what works, what doesn’t and what must be for getting designs turned around to final print tickets and fliers as fast as possible. The 2010 theme provides for a ton of interesting ideas and the new 2010 logo (if you choose to use it) is eponymous and simple enough to work with any design!

Have fun, be creative, and enjoy!

IMPORTANT! SCHEDULES AND WHERE TO SEND YOUR DESIGNS!

Email your finished designs to: artdept@recycledrainbow.org

Submissions are due no later than midnight, January 15, 2009.

The winning design will be announced to participating designers January 18, 2009

Once a winning design is selected, final revisions will be due January 25, 2009.

The winning design will publicly announced February 1, 2009.

THE 2010 LOGO:

The logo can be used on the ticket and/or flier if you wish, or if you don’t want to use it at all, feel free not to. Designs will not be accepted or denied based on use of the logo and the logo can be placed anywhere you wish. There are no logo use guidelines as the logo is never important other than to have some kind of logo for the event we can use when we need a logo.

The logo can be any color, or combination of colors. It can be rotated or scaled in any way you wish. It can be placed atop any pattern or color you wish.

We don’t care much about our logo.

The 2010 RR logo can be downloaded as an scalable vector graphic (EPS) from: http://www.recycledrainbow.org/2010logo/2010logo.eps

TICKETS! TICKETS! TICKETS!

Tickets are the gateway to the event. We have always wanted to impart a sense of excitement with the ticket design so when a participant receives their ticket in the mail they are excited to go to the event. While tickets are (to me) the most fun and intricate print design job, it is also the most important and include the most design guidelines.

Acceptance of ticket design will be based on READABILITY, creativity, visual appeal, readability and incorporation of the theme (and dis-incorporation of the theme) into the design. Also, readability is important to us.

The theme for 2010 is Deception? (the question mark is required).

OVERALL TICKET DESIGN INFORMATION

Design Options:

1. The 2010 logo may or may not appear on the ticket and/or flier

The front of the ticket is the “fun” side of the ticket. Traditionally, the front of the ticket is intricate and detailed making it easy to spot a fake ticket or a ticket that has simply been photocopied. While it is unlikely someone will try an counterfeit Recycled Rainbow tickets, we thought it would be interesting for you to know why they tend to be kind of complex and detailed.

Hey Ho All! CampDaddy here wanting to send out a great big Thank You for participating at RR09!

Thru Armageddon, a bad case of Mutation and upward to Elevation, Recycled Rainbow is what we, as a community, make it. This year was the best RR to date thanks to all of you!

While RR09 is over, the one and only Official Recycled Rainbow Elevation Decompression is on the schedule! RR Decomp includes not only persons who attended RR09 but anyone who wanted to but could not. Anyone who attended and has friends that want to be there to see a mini version are welcome too.

Decompression is scheduled for October 10 at Crystal Springs Campground, 31478 Bagley Road , North Ridgeville , OH 44039 . Entry fee is $10 per person to cover the portajohn rental. There is no re-entry fee. Overnight camping is permitted and encouraged.

BE AWARE!! The section RR will be using is completely primitive. No running water, no electricity. The verge is well trimmed. There is a stand of trees for camping in and setting up rain shelters. There will be one portable restroom present. Bring warm clothes. Bring rain shelters. Bring waterproof boots. Bring ear plugs. Don't drive faster than 5 mph when entering the campground (SERIOUSLY!) No big bonfires are permitted per North Ridgeville fire department. We can have lots of small campfires.

Click here for a list of other places to find us for updates.

Even tho RR09 is ended, RR10 is now less than a year away! Announcements for the theme and dates will up coming sometime after the first of the year. As will announcements concerning Primer for sometime in May.

Rumor mill advocates seem to think a shake up about the theme of RR10 will occur. Keep an eye out for details.

Now Hear This! Now Hear This! Set Recycled Rainbow Preparation Level Bravo point Six!

As is becoming a tradition for us, a pre-emptive task force was deployed to Big ARB’s campground this weekend. They found out the following important information:

1. There is apparently a yellow jacket nest somewhere in the dirt near the east border of the Downtown area. While DBS may attempt to locate it and “take care of it” on Wednesday night, it is strongly advised that participants SET UP TENTS ON OLD GRASS AND NOT ON THE DIRT NEAR THE TREES. We don’t want you sleeping on top of a yellow jacket nest now do we? Remember, yellow jackets are european wasps and do not die after stinging you. They also MARK THEIR FOES- so swatting at them will only piss them off and make them remember you and come after you with intent to sting you.

2. There is still a 40% chance of rain all weekend at the campground. While the weather is difficult to predict and some reports are saying the rain is coming earlier in the week and not later, PREPARE FOR RAIN. There is very little in the way of foliage to sheild you. sun shelters and improvised tarpaulin structures are fun ways to create small social spaces near your camp where you and your new friends can hang out and enjoy those extremely fancy beverages and good times. Remember RAIN IS FUN. RAIN WILL NOT STOP US. The tickets say “rain, sun, sleet or snow” and we mean it.

3. There’s still poison ivy in the trees along the east border of the downtown area. If you go into the border trees for firewood be careful about poison ivy.

4. There are several picnic tables located around the campground. If you want to use one, you are more than welcome to but remember these are campground property. These can be freely moved around as you wish.

That’s all for now. More breaking news to come.
